ResidentSleeper meaning & origin explained

What ResidentSleeper meant on Twitch — the global emote chat used when a stream or topic was boring. Origin, removal, and legacy explained.

ResidentSleeper emote meaning

ResidentSleeper was a Twitch emote for boredom. If chat spammed it, viewers were basically saying the stream or topic had put them to sleep — time to find something more interesting.

ResidentSleeper emote origin

The name combines Resident Evil and sleeping. The emote came from OddlerPro, a streamer active since 2008, who fell asleep during a 72-hour Resident Evil marathon on September 29th, 2012.

It was his third attempt at that marathon and his last. OddlerPro still streams Resident Evil today, and the VOD from the stream where the emote was born is still out there if you want to watch a piece of Twitch history.

ResidentSleeper emote removed

On June 29, 2016, Twitch removed ResidentSleeper as a global emote, stating:

As of today, we have been requested to remove ResidentSleeper and WinWaker. As bummed as we are about these, we’re working on a contest for a new ResidentSleeper. We’ll be making an announcement soon.

Twitch

The replacement contest never happened. ResidentSleeper disappeared from global chat, but the legend survives as a gold custom Twitch emote on OddlerPro’s channel.
